Cherry Juice Side Effects

As with any food, failure to consume in moderation will most likely not have a positive effect. Cherry juice side effects can vary according to how much juice you drink.

Cherries are used for their anti-inflammatory properties, and in the same way as aspirin, over consumption can result in kidney problems, gastrointestinal damage and heart failure in the long term. Specifically tart cherry juice side effects over the short term are diarrhea and stomach cramps. These are due to its high level of sorbitol.

Juice can also have an effect on weight if over consumed. One serving or cup full will usually contain 140 calories which some people are unaware of.

Due to the makeup of both the sweet and tart cherry, they are seen as unsuitable for prolonged consumption by diabetics. They are high in simple carbohydrates which come in the form of glycaemic/high sugar content. Also women who are pregnant should certainly consult their doctor before drinking cherry juice, the reason is essentially due to the potential to develop diabetes during pregnancy.

The seed of the cherry should be avoided at all costs. This means not biting or sucking on it in any way. Once the seed is penetrated, it releases prussic acid which is hydrogen cyanide. Hydrogen cyanide has been used in chemical weapons and is not something that should be taken lightly. Severe exposure can result in respiratory failure and a heart attack. Over-exposure to the levels provided by the cherry toxins will most likely cause headaches, nausea and vomiting.

Effects on Animals

As a wild berry, cherries are often consumed by animals that will also swallow the seed. While no significant research has been carried out on deer or squirrels that consume the entire fruit, it is thought that the digestive system has sped up the process of excreting the harmful cherry toxins and diluting them within the blood over many generations. This is not the case with humans.
